Name: Valerie Hill
Program Completed: Comprehensive Get Lean and Healthy
Q: What has your relationship to your health and fitness been in the past?
Besides high school athletics, I had not considered working toward physical fitness until I turned 38. I had never struggled with my weight or self image, but a gradual discontent and tiredness had crept up with my jean size.
Q: What led you to seek Mavie’s services?
My husband’s coworker, had seen drastic improvement in his physical abilities, old high school injuries, and bragged on Mavie’s delicious recipes. I wanted to learn to eat like Brad and learn how to impact my own fitness as well as my family’s.
Q: Upon meeting Mavie, what was your first impression?
Mavie greeted me with a genuine smile, didn’t judge my motives or goals, and truly personalized the program around foods I enjoyed as well as introduced me to lots of new flavors.
Q: How did you feel when you made the decision to work with Mavie and genuinely pursue your health goals?
I knew I had a lot to learn. Eating the same things I grew up thinking we healthy, were really just limited by my lack of knowledge. Mavie helped me push that envelope to include new spices, vegetables with breakfast, and lots of new recipes.
Q: What was the hardest part about starting your new program?
The hardest part about any fitness program is starting. The first step was to catalog my eating habits for a week, and that alone proved why I needed a change. It’s so easy to justify a little bad food choice, but write it down and a week of small bad choices helps you understand wherein the problem lies.
Q: Were there any specific challenges you knew that you and Mavie needed to work around?
Mavie helped me prepare for the specific challenge of eating around my kids’ sports schedules, eating away from home, and planning ahead to have healthy options available.
Q: Did you feel supported throughout your program?
Even though I feel like I’m a real self-motivator, it was so nice to have Mavie call or text to see how I’m doing or what healthy choice did I choose for lunch. She would have me send her a picture of the homemade pizza I made. It’s nice to have a cheerleader!
Q: How did this program fit in with your lifestyle?
The meal planning helped alleviate a lot of stress and grocery shopping struggles that used to occur on a nightly basis. I have three busy kids and the weekly planning session helped us all!
Q: Did you have any “breakthrough” moments during your work with Mavie?
I was amazed at how much what I ate affected my energy level! Who knew the right fuel could keep the engine running strong all day!
Q: Did you enjoy the food you got to eat while on this program?
I grew up eating a very limited palate of canned vegetables and have really enjoyed the new and fresh flavors that Mavie introduced to my family. We have all found something new that we never knew we loved!
Q: How would you describe your experience working with Mavie?
I thoroughly enjoyed working with Mavie. She didn’t pressure me to fit into any particular fitness mold, she just helped me reach MY goals, change MY family, and ultimately better MY life!
Q: What advice would you give to yourself, if you could go back to before you started this program?
Start sooner! Raise your babies on fresh veggies and natural sugars! You don’t have to settle for low energy lethargy, be more active and eat better food!
Q: Were there any concerns that you had while you were completing this health program? If so, how did you and Mavie address them?
I was concerned about keeping up with my established habits once baseball season started. The games are long and right during dinner. Mavie suggested packing an ice chest of items and eating healthy options instead of concession stand fare. On home games, I made slow cooker meals in my office, and we all had something good and healthy in the parking lot.
Q: Was there any change in how you felt, day-to-day, once you started this program?
I used to need a nap daily. Not only did Mavie’s program keep me from needing a nap, but I had enough energy to clean my kitchen daily and who doesn’t feel better walking into a clean kitchen.
Q: Did you get what you wanted and/or expected from this program?
I did if not more than I expected. The tools and knowledge Mavie equipped me with has changed the health path of my entire family.
Q: What was your overall takeaway from this experience?
You are what you eat, so eat better. Moving is a privilege so don’t take it for granted.
Q: Would you recommend Mavie’s services to someone who has had a health experience similar to yours?
I would and I have. I agree with Mavie that health is strongly linked to nutrition, and I think everyone should learn more about it. Thanks for all the work you put into changing the direction of our ship! Love, the Hills (all of them).

"I’ve lost 40 pounds, improved my physical fitness, and revamped my happiness and energy. The most important factor in my success was the constant motivation and contact I received from Mavie."
- Priscilla Barnes, Business Woman, Adventurer
When I called Mavie, I was in a desperate spot. At 60 years old I had given up on my health and fitness and was eating out for almost every meal. When my sister invited me to start a new fitness program, I told her I just didn’t care anymore. After years of struggling with my health and weight, I felt like I’d tried every diet, every health craze, and nothing stuck. Interestingly, not long after, I bumped into some family friends who looked fantastic. When I asked what they’d been doing, they told me I needed to check out Strategic Nutrition and Fitness with Mavie. I was skeptical. What could be different about this program, I thought.
When I walked into Mavie’s office, I was immediately struck by her devotion to my health and wellbeing. She was both honest, educated, and professional about the specific problems I was facing. I don’t think I actually grasped that day the importance of what I was doing for myself. At my age and weight, I was a high-risk candidate for heart disease, diabetes, and other medical issues. My energy was low, my mood was dark, and in general, I was feeling unhappy with myself. In the span of just a few months, Mavie and I turned all that around.
The changes started out small, but specific. Mavie developed a nutrition program tailored to my personal calorie needs and diet preferences. She challenged to get involved. Together, we found healthy foods and recipes that I enjoyed. I began to carve out time for my own health. Over time, I started to try new foods that she recommended, and today I’m eating delicious meals that I never would have thought to make before.
As I progressed through the Comprehensive Get Lean and Healthy Program, my contact with Mavie became increasingly important. Together, we created a new healthy lifestyle that included my friends and family. If I went out to a restaurant, I knew that I could take a picture of the menu, text it to Mavie, and get a quick response with meal recommendations. When I travelled, we found ways that I could stay on my healthy eating plan and work out. Even more importantly, Mavie helped me change the focus of my health goals. In the past, I was obsessed with the scale. When I worked with Strategic Nutrition and Fitness, I learned that those numbers weren’t nearly as important as how I felt. I had more energy, I was sleeping better, I was happier. As I lost fat, I gained muscle.
Today, I’m moving with a confidence I’ve never experienced. When my husband suggests a bike ride to the square, I agree with enthusiasm. A year ago, I wouldn’t have even thought I’d be able to ride that distance. In the spring, I took my grandchildren to an indoor water park. I wore a swimsuit and chased them through the water. I was cute as a button, and everyone in my family commented on how healthy and happy I looked.
I can’t even express the full extent of what my work with Strategic Nutrition and Fitness has done for me. I went from someone at high risk for health problems, to a happy, athletic, good-looking woman. I feel wonderful, both emotionally and physically. When I wake up each morning, I know that I don’t want to lose where I am right now, and I feel confident that I won’t. I know that Mavie cares about my health and fitness, and I’ll never hesitate to reach out again if I need help. In the end, I understand that my wellbeing is not a destination, but a continuous journey. That used to worry me, but it doesn’t anymore. I can tackle anything, and I’m not afraid to try.
